1. How did the Transatlantic Slave Trade differ from slavery as it existed before this? Why didn’t European empires turn to their own people, or indigenous Americans, as a source of slaves? (Hint: Think here of the racial differences between slave owners and slaves, and the ‘Great Dying’ of indigenous Americans after the arrival of Europeans).

2. Why was there such a high demand for slaves? What were European empires doing in the New World that required this? (Hint: Think of the expansion of trade in commodities such as sugar, cotton, coffee and tobacco). 

3. What was the ‘Middle Passage’? What made it so traumatizing for those who were forced to endure it?
